Welcome to the
Computer Service Group at the MPI-FKF
The Computer Service Group runs the institute's central mail, print, software, backup and web servers, as well as the nine servers providing department specific services. All these servers use the Linux operating system.
The institute's storage area network redundantly hosts up to 60 TB of data. They are backed up on a daily basis using three IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (ITSM) backup and archive servers. Currently the total backup data volume is approaching 90 TB.
In the last years the group integrated on average 100 new PCs per year into the network, bringing the estimated total number to over 1000 PCs used as desktops and for data acquisition purposes. Out of these about seventy percent run Windows and thirty percent run the Linux operating system, whereas High Performance Computing is exclusively done under Linux:
- IBM HS20 Linux cluster (1100 Intel 5420 Cores) - Andersen, Bester, Jansen, Maier, Metzner
- DELL PowerEdge m610 Linux cluster (768 Intel 5540 Cores, 4272 GB) - Andersen, Bester, Jansen, Metzner
- DELL PowerEdge 6100 Linux cluster (144 Intel 5670 Cores, 288 GB) - Boeri
