Backup and Archive

The Computer Service Group offers a central Backup/Archive Service using Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client/server software from IBM. The current version is 5.5.

TSM client software comes in versions for various Linux, Windows and UNIX operating environments. By using the TSM backup service, your previously backed-up files may be recovered in the event of a hard drive failure, upgrade, or accidental deletion. A scheduler program allows the TSM Backup Service to periodically monitor changes you have made to files and perform data backups automatically.

The data of the departmental servers are backed up every night, up to eight versions of frequently changing files are kept for up to 30 days, the last copy is retained for 180 days. After the user leaves the institute, the files are packed into an archive (tar or zip) and moved to the tape robot where they are stored for 10 years and are rewritten from time to time. To facilitate this long term archive process, data should be stored in openly available standard formats. Small files should be combined into large archives to minimize the database load involved. File servers and the SAN are located in the main server room, whereas the backup and archive servers are located in a different part of the building. Copies of the databases and the archive are kept in a fireproof vault in the basement.

Actually about 100 client nodes are defined. These are:

We run TSM, formally ADSM, since 03/24/1997 15:55:31.

We run two servers. This is the current hardware:
